About Centerville, Fremont, CA
Centerville is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Fremont — and one of the East Bay’s oldest settlements, period. Founded in 1850 as a farming community and a stagecoach stop on the Oakland–San Jose route, it grew into the commercial and judicial center of Washington Township once the railroad arrived in the late 1800s, complete with its own Alameda County courthouse. You can still see that history on the ground today: the 1906 Bank of Centerville building, the historic Centerville Train Depot, and the Centerville Pioneer Cemetery on Peralta Boulevard, established in 1855 and listed on the California Register of Historic Resources. In 1956, Centerville joined four other townships — Niles, Irvington, Warm Springs, and Mission San Jose — to incorporate as the City of Fremont. Today it’s one of Fremont’s most walkable, densely populated districts, with roughly 11,000–16,000 residents depending on how the boundary is drawn, a weekly farmers market, and easy access to the Fremont Hub shopping center.
